Danish Pavilion – Speech Matters

by mousse

March 21~2011

Freedom of speech is one of the key issues in the current public debate and one that is becoming increasingly contested, given the steady erosion of civil liberties in many countries today. Denmark has always been at the forefront of the public debate on issues in relation to freedom of speech, but it has also suffered the so-called “trauma of free speech”.

The exhibition Speech Matters aims to provoke a considered debate and to complicate the issue of freedom of speech, highlighting the intricacies, ambiguities and grey areas inherent to the subject, and emphasizing the fact that freedom of speech cannot be exercised or applied in any programmatic or strictly proscribed manner. Finally, the exhibition also touches on the essence of visual artistic practice, which fundamentally entails conditions of freedom of expression. Eighteen artists from ten countries have been invited to participate. The majority will be producing new work for the exhibition.

Mousse at INDEPENDENT

by mousse

March 2~2011

Independent strives to reexamine traditional art fair models and methods of presentation, in response to the changing attitudes and growing challenges for artists, galleries, non-profits, curators and collectors as the experience of viewing and interacting with contemporary art in a group context.

Mousse will borrow crates from some participating galleries to present a temporary library of its printed production, representing the origins, motifs and relations which determine the birth and the forms of a catalogue of books.

Mousse has also published the catalogue of Independent. Independent: A Catalogue of Advertisements is an exercise in straightforwardness. Advertising is of large importance to a gallery (or art venue), arguably the most daring and tricky way of projecting the aims and goals behind its existence in the contemporary landscape. Edited by Esperenza Rosales, and printed in 400 copies, Independent: A Catalogue of Advertisements is a collection of specially commissioned ads by participating galleries, a flattened composite of their programs and activities.

TEN FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF CURATING / Chapter III – What To Do With The Contemporary?

by mousse

February 9~2011

Text — João Ribas
Visuals — Matthew Buckingham

The term ‘contemporary’ seems to shake off all historicism and, according to Hal Foster, floats somewhere outside of “historical determination, conceptual definition and critical judgment”. In the third chapter of Ten Fundamental Questions of Curating, Joao Ribas tries to answer the question “What To Do With The Contemporary?” Setting out from several key events that have helped to define the concept, he comes to a conclusion that shies away from any temporal interpretation.

Ten Fundamental Questions of Curating, edited by Jens Hoffmann and published by Mousse in collaboration with the Fiorucci Art Trust, is distributed with the international edition of Mousse and with subscription copies.

TEN FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF CURATING / Chapter II – How About Pleasure?

by mousse

December 9~2010

Text — Dieter Roelstraete
Visuals — Pierre Bismuth

Why is pleasure—not just visual pleasure—so often ignored in curatorial practice? Dieter Roelstraete guides us through a reflection that sets out from a brief anecdote and urges us to think about the role of entertainment and amusement in contemporary art curating, a practice in which gravity prevails over the centripetal forces of humor and pleasure, seen as a sort of taboo.
