TEN FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF CURATING / Chapter II – How About Pleasure?

by mousse

December 9~2010

Text — Dieter Roelstraete
Visuals — Pierre Bismuth

Why is pleasure—not just visual pleasure—so often ignored in curatorial practice? Dieter Roelstraete guides us through a reflection that sets out from a brief anecdote and urges us to think about the role of entertainment and amusement in contemporary art curating, a practice in which gravity prevails over the centripetal forces of humor and pleasure, seen as a sort of taboo.

BOOKS – Emily Wardill. We Are Behind

by mousse

December 4~2010

Many things seem to interest Emily Wardill, and none of them appears to be immediately accessible, which is curious because her work actually seems to be centred on the very tools and modes of transmission of an experience of knowledge. Or rather her works are indeed accessible and intelligible, only not immediate, the sense being caught behind and beneath her dense imaginary and vast universe of references acting as a dismantling force. All of this is striking in this publication that accompany Wardill’s exhibition at the Appel, where the texts are widely deconstructed and the images are not necessarily related to what can–obliquely–read, but are nonetheless instrumental to understanding the richness of philosophical, political and psychoanalytical references, all, it goes without saying, “behind.”

Riccardo Benassi / Tomaso De Luca at MACRO, Roma

by mousse

November 10~2010

Riccardo Benassi and Tomaso De Luca, the winners in the first year of the competition organized by Fondazione Pastificio Cerere and by Civita, were offered a period of residency at Pastificio Cerere in Rome, a place historically devoted to giving artists a home that fosters dialogue and a shared creative life. The projects that the artists have developed during the residences – which will be visible at MACRO, Rome, until December 12 – take advantage of thresholds and interstices, escaping the rigid confines of the white cube to “haunt” the museum’s areas of passage, places of transition, unforeseen dimensions…

Give and take at Fabbrica del Vapore, Milano

by mousse

November 8~2010

“Give and take” is the end-of-course exhibition of the participants in the 16th Advanced Course in Visual Arts held by the Fondazione Antonio Ratti, which this year had Hans Haacke as the visiting professor.
During the workshop Haacke invited the participating artists to analyse and discuss together the relations between each of them and their places of origin. As a result of this first analysis, the artists were then asked to face issues with regards to their practice in such a context.
The exhibition – that can be visited until the 20th of November – presents installations, performances, videos, photographs and drawings that tackle in a variety of ways the concept of ‘site-specificity’ and of ‘significance’ of a particular object, image, practice or action.

“7 Little Mistakes” presentation at ARTISSIMA

by mousse

November 4~2010

The exhibition “7 Little Mistakes” presented us with the possibility of investigating and reinventing the way we measure the models and categories outlined by art history, with regard to sculpture. Sculpture, as a medium, has become the focus of seven artists who have been invited by Stefano Collicelli Cagol to explore how conventions can be limitations, and how we can look at sculpture, rather than with eyes anchored to the normal tradition of forms, objects and materials, as a way to breathe new life into the shapes and conceptual spaces that inform our world.

CATALOGUE PRESENTATION – Friday, 5 November 2010, from 6.30 PM
ARTISSIMA Meeting Point
Speakers: Stefano Collicelli Cagol, Luigi Fassi and Alberto Salvadori

Ten Fundamental Questions of Curating

by mousse

October 1~2010

Ten Fundamental Questions of Curating is the project by Jens Hoffmann that the Fiorucci Art Trust, together with Mousse, has decided to support, and through which it makes its first approach to the public*. A project and a reflection aimed at outlining the multifaceted physiognomy of one of the figures – the curator – that has contributed most to make the present art scene fluid and dynamic.
Ten contributions, written and visual, to answer fundamental questions of curatorial praxis. Not the definition of a profile, but ten ways of being a curator.

Jessica Morgan opens the first of ten dossiers of the project. Reflection that investigates the multifaceted physiognomy of the curator. The illustrations were selected by Urs Fischer.

Books – Ragnar Kjartansson. Me and My Mother

by mousse

July 6~2010

Me and My Mother is a flipbook realized by Mousse Publishing in conjunction with the eponymous Ragnar Kjartansson exhibition at EX3 Contemporary Art Center in Florence. The book recreates two of the three videos in the project, dividing them into a sequence of images that gradually change from one page to the next, to highlight the three key elements in the work: the maternal figure, an apparently scornful action, and chronological spacing that underscores the inexorable flow of time. Bolzano – Nico Vascellari’s performance

by mousse

July 1~2010

Tomorrow at 7:45 PM, the glass façade of the Museion will become the backdrop for a musical event and performance featuring Nico Vascellari and Z’ev, an American poet and musician who has been a pioneering figure in industrial music. Vascellari’s spontaneity, physical energy and voice will encounter the American performer’s dark, metallic percussions. Following this, there will be a concert by French jazz musician Médéric Collignon.
The evening will also offer the perfect setting for the presentation of a new monograph on Nico Vascellari, published by Mousse for the artist’s exhibition in Bolzano: 150 pages long, with hundreds of photos that capture the spirit of his cathartic performances—from Cuckoo to Gnawing My Own Teeth Behind A Closed Door—the intense hardcore concerts of his band, Lago Morto, and his sculptures and collages, as well as the places and objects that have inspired him, it winds up with a photographic catalogue that is a selection of covers from his extraordinary collection of record albums. The catalogue includes texts by Letizia Ragaglia and Andrea Lissoni in Italian, German, and English.
