Condo in New York 2017

Started in London in 2016 by Vanessa Carlos (Carlos/Ishikawa), Condo—literally taking its name from “condominium”—is a large-scale, collaborative exhibition of international galleries. After a second edition in London earlier this year, the initiative has made its way to New York, where Simone Subal (Simone Subal Gallery) and Nicole Russo (Chapter NY) have organized a whole new round of exhibitions. The project’s underlying principle is as simple as it is effective: a series of host galleries sharing their spaces with visiting galleries by co-curating an exhibition or dividing their galleries and allocating spaces. Cooperation, generosity and mutual support are at the heart of the event, as reported by Nicole Russo: “At its core, Condo is about collaboration and exchange, and I’m thrilled to contribute to the project. I hope it will introduce people to exciting new artists and galleries, while maintaining the importance of the exhibition model.” The project thus aims to promote a way for galleries to exhibit their artists abroad that goes beyond the art fair, allowing the experimentation of new and sustainable modes of exhibition-making that are also appealing for the public. As noted by Simone Subal: “I believe it’s an important time to think through different models of exhibition-making and how we can engage with not only the artworks and other gallerists but also the wider art world. For me, it is key to bring people back to gallery spaces, as this is still where many of the most interesting things happen.”
