Elizabeth Price “Sunlight” at Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea

Focal Point Gallery is pleased to present ‘SUNLIGHT’, Elizabeth Price’s first solo exhibition in a public gallery since winning the 2012 Turner Prize and the inaugural show in the gallery’s new space.

A two-screen video work, SUNLIGHT(2013) occupies the main gallery space and forms the first part of a trilogy of new video works by the artist.

The film has been constructed using thousands of glass-plate slides of the Sun, created between 1875 and 1945, which Price discovered during her on-going residency at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Produced systematically, these are some of the earliest technical images of the Sun and are photographed in ‘K’ light, a light of high temperature. Through this process the volatile surface of the Sun is revealed, a revelation that was used as a means of monitoring the impact of sunspots on the predominately magnetic technology of the period.

These historic images are animated to create a continuous, evolving Sun, which is present throughout the course of the work. This stream of sunlight illuminates a terrain, unfolding across the two projections, in which a concise selection of motifs derived from packaging and branding are presented. Each image is intended to provide an element or prop for a drama.

The systematic labours involved in creating the video, as well as its reversals and re- iterations, are continued in Gallery 2 in a range of deadpan transcriptions and erasures. Two 1:1 scale paintings of fabric designs taken from a silk scarf and a hospital gown are exhibited alongside a series of drawings featuring logos and illustrations extracted from a single local newspaper.

‘SUNLIGHT’ has been created as a result of Price’s residency with Dr Hugh Mortimer, Space Scientist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory initiated by Alice Sharp curator of Invisible Dust and supported by the Leverhulme Trust.
