London – Matthew Draper at Galleria Vela

Matthew Draper paints and draws domestic scenes from an imagined quotidian. Gallery Vela presents new works until the 1 August 2010.

In Playback, Draper shows often comically convoluted, exagerated forms of blankets or duvets stacked, draped or folded, or of the steel tubes of chair and table legs. These work as an analogue for the brush marks which render them. Windows, doors or toilet paper rolls act as compositional devices and stand ins for the proposition of composition.

Draper’s use of colour (or lack of) references old photography or film, the work has cartoon-like qualities too. The familiar scenes that Draper depicts are held distant: he makes pictures, like cartoons, photos or film stills, of a different time, of imagined scenes. Draper’s pictures are emphatic in the quality of their medium; his self conscious mark making and composition colapse into the subject matter, this too holds that subject matter distant.
Doorway, 2010
The viewer is pointedly, simultaneously, drawn in and held at bay (explicitly in Blind and Doorway). Draper complicates the tension between the here of the painting and there of the subject matter in a way that speaks of how painting works, but also of how our experience of the world is always mediated.
