“Le regole del gioco” at Studio Achille Castiglioni, Milano
In design one should start from what one should not do and end up finding what one should.
The Studio Museum Achille Castiglioni, which opened to the public in 2006, contains sixty years of the career one of the greatest designers of the twentieth century, Achille Castiglioni (1918–2002). Visitors to the Museum can see not only the objects he designed but also gain insight into the process he adopted when creating his works. One of the key exponents of the golden age of Italian design, Castiglioni managed to combine freedom of experimentation with the discipline of rationality, producing some of the most ingenious objects of the modern world, which are still around us in our everyday lives today.
The exhibition project, curated by Luca Lo Pinto under the artistic direction of Edoardo Bonaspetti, involves eighteen Italian and foreign artists of international renown who have been invited to interact with the works, objects and architecture of the Studio Museum, suggesting possible forms of contact with Castiglioni’s way of working.
Almost all the works have been specially created for the setting. They are the outcome of a process that, in the months leading up to the exhibition, involved the artists visiting and studying the premises and distinctive features of the Studio Museum. The various works will thus interact in a unique way with all the various elements that constitute the space. The artists have been invited to create works that are not invasive, in order to relate to the setting and blend into it.
Produced by La Triennale di Milano in collaboration with the Fondazione Achille Castiglioni, the exhibition pays tribute to the place and to Castiglioni himself, with the aim of illustrating the huge influence his work still has today on the younger generation of artists, architects and designers. By interspersing the works of the invited artists with the objects in the studio, the exhibition will give the public the chance to discover the great designer’s world of the imagination in unusual, inspiring ways.
The project involves contemporary artists, who have a wide range of visual forms of expression, with the aim of promoting a composite, diversified view of both the works and of the place that houses them. To achieve this, no artistic or thematic constraints have been imposed, but just the suggestion to create “subtle” works, in order to convey the idea of the exhibition and the studio as a single whole, which can be interpreted on a number of different levels.
Visitors will be accompanied by a member of the Foundation, who will illustrate the Studio Museum and the project, with this interpretation constituting a further narrative level.
