Sebastiano Sofia “Ariel” at CAR DRDE, Bologna

“We were all full; the desire of the old unit as well as its research has the name of Eros.”
–Plato

“Ariel”, the first solo exhibition by Sebastian Sofia (Verona 1986) hosted by CAR DRDE in Bologna, is a survey on transformation and the many great features of the sculptural material, on the fragile boundaries between nature and artifice, on the power of desire. The Mermaid, in its mixed composition of woman and fish, is the emblem of the “transition period” within which anything can happen.

Sebastiano Sofia’s work circles around the concept of transformation though its formal aspect—considering the processes and the materials of drawing and sculpture—and investigates concepts about body, identity and death. The artist explores the blurred lines between nature and artifice and considers the desire as the origin of the transformation of things.
